Modrigal Celebrates 40 Years!

Date: 2/4/2010

Fashion Flash Back

The year is 1970. The fashion world is reeling from the dizzying effects of Carnaby Street. Trendy is the only acceptable dress code for a generation of young adults warmed by Woodstock and determined to carve an identity beyond the disillusionment of the '60s.

Mini skirts, midi skirts, maxi skirts, love beads, hip hugging bell bottoms, hot pants and psychedelic colours replace the neat little suits, gloves and hats of the previous decade.

In February 1970, two enthusiastic school teachers, Dorothy Foster, and Sally Taylor opened Modrigal at 26 Talbot Street East in Leamington, and thus began a 40-year adventure in retailing with multiple locations in Leamington, Chatham and Windsor.

Modrigal boasts of a rich and gratifying past, whether it be the two Judy Awards for Merchandising Excellence, the fund raising events to benefit local High Schools, Hospice of Windsor, St. Joseph’s Hospital of Chatham , Aids Committee of Windsor, St. Mary’s Church of Walkerville or the Canadian Kidney Foundation to honour Fred Foster whose store “The Abbey” was part of many of these fundraisers.

Modrigal is grateful to all our staff who have served our customers for 40 years. It is so gratifying to look back at the teenagers who worked for Modrigal and recognize your accomplishments as Doctors, Lawyers, Community Leaders, Teachers, Mothers and Grandmothers. WOW!

Indeed Modrigal is awed by the spin off of generations who continue to shop at our store, proving that style is an attitude, not an age.

Conrats on 40 great years!
